My First, Second Life!
So guess what? My first life is no longer good enough. I thought I was doing well. I served my country, I attended and completed a four year university, I met and fell in love with someone, we bought a house, we have dogs, hold down a job and shockingly we have friends that we can actually see in First life. But it is not enough. Now I have to start all over in Second life.
I have to say it's very realistic. First life is slow and takes time to get going, Second life completely slows down your computer. First life you have friends that you have known your entire life, Second life your friends live forever. In First life you have pets and come to love them as family, in Second life your friends are pets and they speak to you. In First life time flies when you're having fun, in Second life you can fly for fun or breathe under water, whatever. The comparisons can go on forever.
Maybe if I work really hard I will accumulate the riches in Second life that I so foolishly chased in First life. I can dedicate the next 30 years trying to achieve my goals in Second life because who needs real life in the First place?
On Second thought...........

Cyberethics Response
What's changed is that we fail to realize we are addicted to internet communication. Sure we laugh at the idea of going a day without email or heaven forbid, Google. But we don't really know unless we are forced to go without. Have you ever lost your phone, it's the most frustrating thing. The feeling of helplessness over an object that fits in your pocket. WOW. If your car breaks down you call a friend and manage to make it through the day without transportation but the feelings just don't compare to the loss of wireless communication with the world.
Make no mistake, I love everything about my internet communication, but I do wonder how far removed I've become with society and how much closer I've with digital sources of information.
